Garden Walls & Retaining Walls in Coventry & Warwickshire

Boundary walls, feature walls and retaining walls need the right foundations and detailing for their location and purpose.

What's included

Choosing the right kind of wall

A freestanding boundary wall separates spaces, while a retaining wall supports ground at different levels. These are different structural jobs, even when they use the same facing brick. Height, length, exposure and nearby trees influence the design. Piers, returns and coping details may help form a durable wall, but their dimensions should not be guessed. Discuss the intended purpose, gate positions and preferred appearance before selecting materials.

Foundations and retained ground

Foundations need to suit the wall and the ground beneath it. A retaining wall also has to resist pressure from soil and water, so drainage behind the wall is a key design consideration. Depending on the design, this may involve suitable backfill, drainage outlets or other provisions. Some walls need structural engineering input. A drainage detail that works for a small landscaping feature is not automatically suitable for a taller wall or a heavily loaded boundary.

Boundaries, finishes and maintenance

Confirm the boundary position and ownership before replacing a wall, especially beside a neighbour or public pavement. Planning requirements depend on factors such as height and proximity to a highway; conservation restrictions can also apply. Copings and joint finishes should manage rainwater rather than encourage it into the wall. Existing leaning, cracking or loose brickwork should be assessed before deciding whether local repairs or rebuilding are appropriate. Keep people away from a wall that appears unstable.

Our process

Every project begins with a conversation about what you want to achieve and what is already there. A site visit lets the proposed work be considered alongside access, existing materials and any drawings. Use that visit to raise questions about preparation, finishes and the boundaries of the brickwork package. Agreeing these points early helps everyone understand the work and the sequence before it starts.

Garden Walls: common questions

Can you build retaining walls?

Retaining walls are listed on the homepage. Retained height, ground conditions, loading and drainage determine the design and any engineering input; we’ll confirm at the free site visit.

Does a garden wall need planning permission?

Requirements depend on height, location and restrictions affecting the property, including proximity to a highway. Check your local planning authority rather than assuming every wall is exempt.

Why does drainage behind a retaining wall matter?

Water collecting behind a wall adds pressure. The drainage arrangement must suit the wall design and ground conditions; we’ll confirm at the free site visit.

Can a cracked or leaning wall be repaired?

Sometimes local repairs are appropriate, but movement may indicate a foundation or structural problem. Do not rely on repointing alone to stabilise a leaning wall; we’ll confirm at the free site visit.
